In the book “Punching In: The Unauthorized Adventures of a Front-Line Employee“, Alex Frankel tells us what it is like to work in the front-lines of the service industry. He worked at UPS, Gap, Starbucks, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and Apple Store.

Book: “You Want Fries With That”

You Want Fries with That: A White-Collar Burnout Experiences Life at Minimum Wage” was written by Prioleau Alexander. Alexander was an advertising executive who got tired of his white-collar job. He quit to do various work in the service industry such as pizza delivery, emergency room technician, ice cream person, etc. Is it better or worst than his white-collar job? This book tells of his experiences and his answer to that question.

Book: “Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It”

The title of this book by Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson basically says it all: “Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It: No Schedules, No Meetings, No Joke–the Simple Change That Can Make Your Job Terrific

If that doesn’t say it all, then how about the quote on the front cover: “If you work, you need this book” says Timothy Ferriss.

Book by Professor Warren: “Two Income Trap”

Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard law professor, co-authors the book The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke

Book: “MicroTrends” by Mark Penn

Mark Penn, a famous pollster, writes “Microtrends: The Small Forces Behind Tomorrow’s Big Changes” which explains certain interesting trends in society. Below is also a video of Penn speaking about his book at the Google headquarter in Mountain View, California.

“All Marketers are Liars” is a non-fiction book by Seth Godin subtitled “The Power of Telling Authentic Stories in a Low-Trust World”.

Chris Anderson, editor of “Wired”, coined the term “Long Tail” that is now widely used today in regards to the new business dynamics that have come about due in part to the internet. It is the idea products with low sales volume can still have a large marketshare if you sell many of such products. And now you can since distribution cost have dropped to the point where this is possible.
